"A Blitz of Caring and Attention Can Overcome a Mountain of Challenges"

Local Newspaper Credits Diplomas Now with Big Results at Columbus, Ohio, Schools and Calls for Its Expansion

Diplomas Now couldn't be prouder of the real transformation underway in Columbus. Not that long ago, several struggling high schools in that community were beset with staggering problems. Today, after working with Diplomas Now for a couple of years, these schools have made huge gains on standardized tests. The local newspaper just called for the expansion of Diplomas Now to other schools, and the state of Ohio just awarded $700,000 to one of those high schools - in part because Diplomas Now is projected to save the district nearly $9 million.

Hats off to all the students, teachers, staff and administrators in Columbus!!

Here are the details:

Students at struggling South High and Linden-McKinley

STEM posted huge performance gains on standardized state tests. South improved passing rates for reading by 31.8 percentage points and by 29.6 percentage points for writing. There were double-digit increases on math, science and social studies tests, and black students narrowed the gap with white peers. Linden-McKinley STEM posted its best results in at least three years, with big gains in reading, math, writing, science and social studies.

A Columbus Dispatch editorial quotes a school district official crediting Diplomas Now for the big gains and urges its expansion to other schools. "The gains at some of the district's poorest-performing high schools show that kids who have struggled can do significantly better with focused attention and help," the editorial said. "... The progress is something to be replicated, if possible....South and Linden-McKinley STEM show that a blitz of caring and attention can overcome a mountain of challenges."

And the Ohio Controlling Board just approved a $700,000 grant to the Diplomas Now partnership at South High School from the Straight A Fund, in part because the partnership is expected to achieve a nearly $9 million cost savings to the district. "These Straight A award winners represent some of the most innovative thinking taking place in classrooms all over Ohio. They recognize that it takes bold, new approaches to equip our students for a more demanding future," said Dr. Richard A. Ross, superintendent of public instruction.
